The IARU Member Society in the Netherland Antilles VERONA (Vereniging voor Experimenteel Radio Onderzoek in de Nederlandse Antillen) celebrated their 60th Anniversary last November.
Several personalities attended the event including Mr. Adrieans Minister of Telecommunication; Mr. de Canha Director of the Bureau Telecommunication & Post; Dr. Angel Ramirez from the Board of the Red Cross of Curacao: Dr. Whiteman representative of the Aruba Amateur Radio Club; and the Treasurer and Area E Director of the IARU Region 2 Mr. E. Donawa 9Y4NED.
Mr. Adrieans, Minister of Telecommunication, during his speech indicated the desire of the government to include amateur radio in the ICT initiative for the Country and requested that VERONA carry on training in digital modes. VERONA would be given the status of a technical school under the Education Ministry.
VERONA’s President Brett Ruiz PJ2BR thanked the Red Cross for allowing them to have free of charge a room in their facility as club house, including their tower.
President Brett Ruiz also thanked the Bureau Telecommunication & Post for helping amateur radio while defending our spectrum and for the donation of a digital repeater system. He also announced that VERONA has started working on a new license class for the youth.
Finally he thanked Digicel for the donation of an is Andrew 7.3 meter dish and complete satellite station to be used with the Middelbare Technische School for communication experiments having as ultimate hope the increase of radio amateurs in Curacao.
IARU Region 2 congratulates VERONA for their Anniversary and enthusiasm in promoting Amateur Radio.
