In the beginning of 2025, ITU‑R published an updated version of the Recommendation M.1041 – 3, Future Amateur Radio Services. The recommendation deals with general, technical and operational characteristics expected to future systems in amateur service.
The recommendation encourages experimentation and learning with respect to the use of different transmission modes and the propagation characteristics across different frequency bands, the worldwide interoperability, independent of other radio services, available for new operators and those in developing countries.
The recommendation also stimulates the development of emergency communications and recognize the educational value of amateur service, the linkages between education institutions and national amateur societies: “applying the technologies and techniques of amateur radio is also an ideal way to promote scientific, technical, engineering and math education for youngster students in the classroom”.
This revision was approved in November’s ITU‑R Working Party 5A and Study Group 5 meetings with participation IARU representatives and national delegations, including from Region 2: Jonathan Siverling (WB3ERA, USA), Paul Coverdale (VE3ICV, Canada) and Flavio Archangelo (PY2ZX, Brazil), IARU CITEL Coordinator and ITU‑R Rapporteur for Amateur and Amateur Satellite Services.
This is the first result of other revisions covering different reports, recommendations and handbooks, concomitantly to the work on WRC-27 agenda items on ITU‑R and regional telecommunications organizations like CITEL.
